Wandsworth, now an inner London borough, was once a picturesque town on the river Thames about four miles southwest of London. In the eighteenth century it was a parish in Surrey, and the gentle rural landscape was scattered with estates owned by nobles and gentry, such as the Archbishop of York and Earl Spencer. Windmills were dotted here and there and the sound of milling never ceased.
