The Faust legend derives from a chapbook, the Faustbuch, published in Frankfurt in 1587. Penned by an anonymous author, it tells a story based on various contemporary tales of errant magicians and alchemists. In the Faustbuch, these figures were presented as a single character, Johann Faust, whose pivotal act was to sell his soul to the devil in exchange for occult secrets and powers. The story was subsequently dramatized in England by Christopher Marlowe; his play, The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus, appeared in 1604.
