Anhand einer systematischen Forschungssynthese von empirischen Studien zur Gentrifizierung in deutschen Städten arbeitet Jan Üblacker die Entwicklung des Forschungszweigs auf. Dabei bezieht er auch eine Vielzahl bisher nicht berücksichtigter Qualifikationsarbeiten ein und zeigt, dass deren Herangehensweisen und Befunde einen deutlichen Mehrwert für die Stadtforschung erbringen. Durch die systematische Verknüpfung von theoretischen Konzepten, Methoden und empirischen Befunden des sozialen, baulichen, gewerblichen und symbolischen Wandels von Wohngebieten verdeutlicht der Autor die weitreichende empirische Relevanz der Gentrifizierung in deutschen Städten, weist jedoch auch auf Lücken in der bisherigen Erforschung des Phänomens hin.
