Vor dem Hintergrund aktueller multipler Krisen der Nicht-Nachhaltigkeit kommt Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung (BNE) eine immer bedeutendere Rolle zu. Zwar gibt es vielfältige berechtigte Gründe zur Kritik, wenn Bildung direkt in den Dienst gesellschaftlicher Transformationsprozesse gestellt wird. Dennoch bleibt in demokratischen Gesellschaften das Lernen aller Mitglieder ein wesentlicher Treiber für Veränderungen. So heißt es in der Berliner Erklärung zum Auftakt des UNESCO-Programms BNE 2030: „Transformatives Lernen für Mensch und Erde ist überlebensnotwendig für uns und für künftige Generationen. Die Zeit zu lernen und für unseren Planeten zu handeln ist jetzt“ (DUK/BMBF 2020, S. 7).
